Our first travels with Guinness the Frenchie to Altenfeld, Thuringia, Germany. This cute cabin was the perfect getaway.
Altenfeld is the most southern place of the Ilm district in the valley of the Oelze brook between the Thuringian Forest and the Thuringian Slate Mountains. Altenfeld was named for the first time in 1492, but for long it was only a deserted site. The settlement of a glass-works in 1646 resulted in the revival of the place. In former times there were already travelling glassworks in the “altes feld“ (old field) which lead to the name of Altenfeld. The beautiful location in a high valley surrounded by mountains of over 800 m and woodlands.

The ruins of the church belonging to the former Benedictine monastery stand very picturesquely yet impressive in size in the small village of Paulinzella between Rudolstadt and Stadtilm at the foot of the Thuringian Forest. Founded at the beginning of the 12th century by Paulina (around 1067-1107), the daughter of a high-ranking royal official, and then called Marienzella, the monastery soon grew to a substantial size.
Greifenstein Castle, standing on the town‘s landmark mountain, is one of the oldest feudal fortresses in Germany. Known until the 17th century as Blankenburg Castle, it today consists of a principal building with a great hall and tower. It has several courtyards and bastions. The Counts of Schwarzburg-Blankenburg resided here in the 13th and 14th century.
Schwarzburg Castle towers on a mountain crag high above the wildly romantic Schwarza valley. The first definite mentions in records of a fortress complex in connection with one of the oldest and most powerful aristocratic families in Thuringia, the counts of Schwarzburg, date back to 1123.
The Krämerbrücke (Merchants‘ bridge) is a medieval bridge in the city of Erfurt, in Thuringia in central Germany, which is lined with inhabited, half timbered buildings on both sides. It is unique in Europe.[citation needed] The footbridge spans the Breitstrom, a branch of Gera River, connecting Benediktsplatz and Wenigemarkt.
